Today I want to convert my favorite musician’s interview into my blog, and hopefully, it will bring a new perspective. I chose this interview because this
conversation is informative and I believe the sources.
He
went to college in Boston for a year. He is from a town where several people
can play guitar, he just went 2 semesters in college, in the first semester he
wants to be the best guitarist. During the Christmas break, he came to his home
and contemplation his dreams then found that if he just wanted to be a good
guitar player he couldn't transcend what’s called “The Great Guitar Player”, then
he switched his mind and wanted to be "listenable". As a musician, he felt learning about humanity
was great for him due to he could see how people see their-self, and how to describe success.
When he grew up all his to do was scale up the
expectations/goals. In 1999 he played for 180 people, record deal in 2001, toured in the USA, and in 2002 was first winning Grammy Awards. After winning
prestigious awards his career grew fast. At the time he didn’t
realize what he had or even expectations his career would be crazy.
He
grew up in the golden era of the 80s where that era is musically complex and for him nowadays it's rare to find something like that. The musicians nowadays are opposite back
80s when the music was well composed & performed. His taste in music came from the influence of love-pop music, R&B, the blues & Pop-rock
musicians like Huey Lewis. He admires Bob Dylan because he’s brilliant,
obsessed, and humanized.
The
biggest challenge to John Mayer was people had difficulty understanding/
appreciating him as an artist because he hadn’t made a statement and restated
himself. For him in his career isn’t to be number 1. When he was young, he had unstable feelings when he wanted to do something and now in his age of 30s, he felt more actionable feelings “if you can do it, do
it all the time. As long as you can do it and show people what you can do”
John had throat surgery, and he had botulism (a health problem in the form
of poisoning caused bacterium Clostridium Botulinum). In the process in the
hospital he thought he want passes the moment by imagining himself becoming an
athlete “athlete sort of hand their body over the team”. When he injected
medicine into her neck he only thought he loved music, singing, and being an
artist. He never really freaked out about difficult times because he knew what he loved.
John decided to move to Montana because he liked the countryside setting, for him moving in there was the save of his life because previously he hadn’t much of life. When he moved, it took him out of the noise. The first time he moved there, it was really hard to fear missing out on everything. In there he does whatever he wants like going to a bookshop or even spending time in the woods. When he back to LA he felt he know more better about himself.
“Knowing what I knew about where the dog lays, when the sunset is, where you
have to go see the greatest view” are the result of his contemplating and he got something that belonged to him
which he never had because previously he always belonged to something else. From this interview, we can see John’s view that he wants to experience
many things about his life because when he becomes elderly he never wants to regret anything, “I have an advantage
to my life as a celebrity”-In a funny way when talked.
For him, the mind is important he doesn't want unwanted visitors
into him, that is why he doesn’t like gossip, no magazine at home or anything
unimportant, meanwhile many celebrities make their lives well by spending much
of dollars to make something terrible and gaining things they planned. John had considered going to design
school because he loved the design, but it was just for a couple of days and now he
didn’t, he was just interested.
The Album of Born and Raise was the most incredible experience he ever had
to record. For him to create this album he didn’t have to be someone’s
favorite, he wanted people randomly to discover that music, and when they heard they knew that it was Mayer’s
product. He trained himself to produce the music that he thought that’s music (not
exist) and tried to transform it into something (existed) – “I know it’s kind
arrogance”-Mayer.
He built the habit to always resilience. When
you hearing something always writing it and not let stop writing, you have to
encourage yourself and persuade yourself and when arrogance comes in, is like
everything you're doing is great, everything is great, and your badass that doesn’t
suck. Because that is not the time to tell yourself it sucks, and it's interesting
to go into that pure make-believe wouldn’t it be cool if I had a song that, then
*John acted play good guitar-cool way* I tried it lets do it that fast you. If
you can get that you cannot be scared of that the really an incredible moment
to just continually throw yourself.
From this interview, it seems John is a thinker and action person, and this can be heard in his statements for example
“People who don’t want (not everybody) would like to continue their inaction on something, the easiest way to do that is to argue the existence of it. I didn’t break the vase because there was no vase. It's a really great way to ignore the question of “if there was, how would we fix it?” and I was very discouraged by that.
There are a few things causes of action,
that you can't continue to low yourself into action by saying I personally believe
it doesn’t exist and don’t you encroach my personal beliefs because “in my
belief system it doesn’t exist and you being someone who argued my belief?”. There is no way to put your energies into that,
you have to then talk about what there is to fix because there’s no controversy.
